A Republican challenger to John Conyers, Jr. filed his petitions to run in Michigan's 14th district
yesterday. While Chad Miles has only raised slightly less than $400 and is reported to have just $17 COH, something smells distinctly like a turd about to blossom here.
The challenger is being packaged in a way that is eerily similar to the many Fighting Dems who are running on our side. Does anyone doubt that Karl Rove and his minions are terrified that the Chairmanship of the Judiciary just might change come November?
Consider the following, in which the Republican challenger discusses his "concern" for the culture of greed, power and corruption in DC:
I am deeply concerned with the direction that politics has taken in the last several years. To some in Washington, the acquisition and retention of political power seems to be more important than the national security of the United States.
With all due respect, Mr. Miles, while we may agree on the last sentence of that statement, if you were truly concerned about members of Congress busying themselves with the acquisition of political power, you would be volunteering for Rep. Conyers' re-election campaign.
Soldiers are being prosecuted for split second life and death decisions that they are making on the battlefield, leaks to the media are compromising intelligence gathering efforts meant to protect Americans at home and abroad, and our economy here in Michigan is the worst in the nation. Detroit suffers from a staggering 14% unemployment rate yet our representative in Washington continues to call for the impeachment of the President based on the manufactured scandal of the day instead of trying to improve the quality of life for the people that he was elected to represent.
The rest of his website lists some truly odious misrepresentations of Rep. Conyers' record (e.g., "Dems Hurt Election Chances With Conyers' Show Trials") and a truly acrobatic twisting of the work Conyers is doing on behalf of the American people.
Peruse it if you must. Miles looks like small potatoes now, but I have a sneaking suspicion the Republicans are going to fund him well over the coming months and do everything they can to slime the man who is arguably the most ethical and hard-working member of Congress.
Help Rep. Conyers out. For a contribution of $60 or more, you can order a copy of his report, The Constitution In Crisis. Volunteer if you live in or near Michigan's 14th District. Write LTEs setting the record straight.
We owe the man who is working so hard to save our Democracy all of the help we can provide!
